Community Art (Murals & Mosaics)

Murals have been a core feature of my Community Arts practice since the late 70's. They have are an antidote to urban decay the world over, and I continue to be inspired by them. Usually, but not always, I work with other artists & community members, including and especially, children. Many of my murals have been created in schools, covering subjects such as bullying, communication, the environment, women's suffrage, and in recent years, local indigenous creation stories (see photos in gallery). For many years I worked with street kids and young people termed 'at risk'. This included working as artist in residence in a youth correctional facility, drop-in centres and a youth health centre where much of my work was focused around issues such as drug and alcohol use, and crime.
Nowadays my focus is more on the environment. I live out in the country, on the coast, and much of my mural art is about the ocean, the coastal environment, and surfing.

Here is a selection of murals from early eighties to the present. Also check out the main gallery for other recent work:

Detail of the 'women & work' mural at the Domain, Sydney, for the Women & Arts festival 1982.

Adelaide festival centre mural 1982, with Carol Ruff, Ronnie Ansell, Eve Glenn & Colin Brown.

In 1992 for the Arts Festival, the mural was painted over. We had originally painted the previous one on boards, so that it could be relocated rather than covered, but this was not to be. Instead a team comprising members of the original plus several others, conveyed this design by the now late Trevor Nicholls to the wall. This image shows it with the scaffolding not yet removed.

'Safe space mural' part 1, Paralowie school, South Australia 1993. Conceived, designed & painted with primary age students. The school then had children from over 80 different nationalities/ language traditions.

'Safe space' mural part 2

'When I'm 64' Mural on Frome Rd Adelaide for the Come Out youth arts festival 1984. This mural has since been altered, with my permission and involvement.

Wave mural on the old Middleton general store, 1995. The store was rebuilt some years ago so this mural was lost. I have since replaced it with this one.

Floor mural of Southern Right whale & calf. Victor Harbor Whale museum & education centre 1995. Recently restored.

The following three images are from a mural on the refurbished toilet block on the seafront at Middleton South Australia.

Mural on new 'Bombora'cafe at Goolwa Beach. The coffee is excellent. I should know. I drank a lot of it on the job!
