RECONCILLIATION MURAL AT SOUTH COAST DISTRICT HOSPITAL

19th March 2015
This was a collaboration with South Coast District Hospital and the Aboriginal Youth Action Committee from Victor Harbor High School. Nina Oughton, the Youth Health Coordinator, and Anne Price, the Director of Nursing, came up with the idea to put a wall aside for a mural in the hospital. The Young people from AYAC came up with the concept and design ideas, which the artist interpreted into the final design. This was then shown to everyone involved, including the Ngarrindjeri language group and Community. Everyone approved it, with various suggestions including the addition of various totem animals and birds. This gave a beautiful extra layer to the meaning of the design, which reflected community health from and Indigenous perspective. It took us three afternoons a weeks for three weeks, to paint the mural, with minimum disruption to the working life of the hospital. It was a fresh new experience for all of us to work in such a context and to interact with staff and patients alike. Everyone was very positive and encouraging and was very pleased with the end result. Thank you very much to all involved and well done!
